The PVC vs composite question has a one-sentence answer: composite is a wood-and-plastic board wrapped in a protective shell, while PVC contains no wood at all, and in Seattle’s wettest locations, that difference is the whole ballgame. For a standard backyard deck, capped composite is usually the better value. The Construction Difference, in 30 Seconds
A capped composite board is roughly half wood flour, half plastic, extruded around each other and sheathed in a polymer cap. The cap is excellent armor, but there’s still wood inside it, which is why composite boards have (small) moisture-absorption specs, why cut ends get sealed, and why manufacturers cap the board in the first place.
A PVC board (TimberTech’s AZEK line is the best-known, and Fiberon makes PVC lines as well) is synthetic top to bottom, usually a cellular PVC core under a dense polymer capstock. There is nothing in the board that can absorb water, swell, or feed rot, mold, or moss. Not “resistant”, there’s simply no organic material present.

PVC reflects more solar energy than wood-filled boards; manufacturers cite surface temperatures up to 30° cooler than comparable composites. On a west-facing rooftop with zero shade, that’s the difference between usable and untouchable in August.
Two honest dings on PVC: it can sound slightly less solid underfoot than dense composite, and glossy older lines scratch more visibly. Board samples on your actual site settle both concerns quickly.
One installation note that follows from the material: PVC moves more with temperature than composite does, so its end-gapping and fastening specs are stricter, and the gap you leave depends on the temperature the day you install. It’s routine for crews that work with PVC weekly and a classic mistake for crews that don’t, a Seattle deck installed tight on a 45° March morning meets its first 85° afternoon in July, and the boards have nowhere to go but up. Scratches: the honest one in composite’s favor. PVC’s softer core can show furniture drag marks more readily than dense composite, and glossy older PVC lines showed every scuff. Current matte capstocks are far better, but if you’re sliding heavy planters around weekly, composite’s harder surface takes the abuse slightly better. Furniture pads solve it on either.
Fire: neither material is fireproof, but several premium PVC lines carry Class A or B flame-spread ratings that most wood-filled composites don’t match, occasionally relevant for Seattle rooftop assemblies and multifamily projects, where the fire rating of everything on the roof gets reviewed.

The premium runs roughly $10–$15 per installed square foot. On a 300 sq ft backyard deck with decent sun and airflow, that’s $3,000–$4,500 for insurance composite mostly doesn’t need, which is why composite remains the better value for most Seattle backyards. The Third Option Nobody Mentions: Mineral-Based Boards
A newer category is worth thirty seconds before you decide: mineral-based composite (MBC) boards replace the wood flour in the core with mineral filler, splitting the difference between the two materials in this article, no organic content to absorb moisture (like PVC), but stiffer and denser underfoot (like composite), with very low thermal expansion. Pricing lands between premium composite and PVC. The category is younger, so there’s less long-term field history and fewer color lines to choose from, and availability in Seattle is thinner than for the big-brand standards. We don’t recommend MBC over AZEK for rooftops yet (the track record gap matters at that price) but for a wet-site ground-level deck it’s a legitimate quote to ask for, and we’re happy to price one.
